Rainbow Resilience Self-Defense

At Rooted Resilience, we offer specialized self-defense and resilience training for our LGBTQIA+ community under the name Rainbow Resilience.

If you are part of this community, you may, unfortunately, know that discrimination, intimidation, harassment, and even physical or sexual violence remain common realities. Research across the EU and the Netherlands consistently shows that LGBTQIA+ people are faced with these threats at significantly higher rates than their cis-hetero peers, with trans, non-binary, and intersex people most at risk.

It’s in response to these issues, and guided by a heartfelt mission, that Rooted Resilience created the Rainbow Resilience training programs. We find it especially important for our community to build resilience so that we can move through the world feeling more confident, capable, empowered, and safe.

What is Rainbow Resilience?

Rainbow Resilience is a six-week self-defense and resilience course, developed for and with the local LGBTQIA+ community. The program goes beyond teaching physical techniques, diving into topics like awareness, emotional strength, connection, and confidence, so you can move through the world feeling safer, more self-assured, and empowered.

Over the course of six weeks, you’ll train your body, mind, and emotions to navigate life with greater confidence and safety. You’ll learn to recognize and de-escalate risky situations, set and protect your personal boundaries, and apply simple, effective self-defense techniques. The program also focuses on building emotional resilience, helping you manage stress, fear, or shame and recover more quickly from distressing experiences. Practical strategies will help you prevent risky situations and stay safe, while shared learning and peer support foster trust, connection, and a strong sense of community.

Each session combines these elements with hands-on physical training through movement, drills, and partner work, alongside reflection and discussion to share experiences and develop emotional insight. Role-plays and scenario exercises give you the chance to practice responses in a safe environment, and you’ll leave each class with practical tools to continue strengthening your resilience at home.

What to expect?

  • Awareness & De-escalation Skills

How to spot red flags, trust instincts, and intervene (verbally, spatially) before things escalate.

  • Boundaries & Assertiveness

How to clearly communicate who you are, what is okay for you, and how to stand up for yourself in ways that feel safe and true.

  • Basic & Effective Self-Defense Moves

Simple, but highly effective self-defense techniques. Learn how to protect yourself physically if needed, how to stop or deflect an attack, using leverage rather than strength.

  • Emotional Regulation & Mental Resilience

Practices to deal with fear, shame, or aftermath; how to stay present under stress; how to bounce back when shaken.

  • Building Trust & Community

Shared learning, peer-support, discussing lived experiences; learning from one another in a space of mutual respect and care.

“Rainbow Resilience reflects what I deeply believe in: that great strength develops from being grounded, honest, empathetic, and part of community. This program is designed to help you protect your body, but it’s also my mission to empower you through high-quality training that is fun, inclusive, and meets you where you’re at, so you can move through life with more self-confidence and peace. Rainbow Resilience is an expression of this mission in service of our community, who carries more weight of risk and marginalization.

What I bring to the table is years of experience in self-defense (through JUNO and martial arts), trauma-sensitivity, and a passion for building people up to feel empowered and capable. Because everyone, regardless of identity, deserves to feel strong, safe, and seen.”
